Family Nature Journaling on the Deasey Pond Trail in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, September 7, 2025

Date: Sunday, September 7, 2025, meet at 9:45am at the gravel pit parking lot at the start of Deasey Pond Trail, to the right after you pass trough the Loop Road Gate.
Difficulty and length in miles: This is about 2 miles of hiking, but is a gentle, non-strenuous hike that is perfect for all ages and abilities.
Description of the hike: We will be hiking the Deasey Pond Trail off the Loop Road. We will start on the Deasey Pond Trail to Deasey Pond. There is a wooden platform looking out over the pond where we will sit and learn more about nature journaling, have a snack, and do some nature journaling. This is a family hike, so all ages are encouraged to attend!
What to bring: Bring warm clothes just in case, bug stuff, good footwear for the trail may be slippery in places, and water. Nature journals, art supplies, and a handout on nature journaling will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. We should finish by lunch time, but feel free to bring lunch for after and a snack for the midway point.
Limit: The number of people is limited to 10 total, so make sure to register in a timely manner.

Date: Saturday, January 24, 2026, 10:00 AM at the Matagamon Gate Parking lot at the North End of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, return time 4:00 PM
Route options depending on the group and snow conditions: Both follow slightly rolling terrain
- Ski the Loop from Matagamon Gate to the Old River Road along the East Branch of the Penobscot River and back on the IAT to the parking lot, 3 miles
- Ski from Matagamon Gate along the IAT to Haskell Hut and Haskell Pitch and back, 10 miles return
What to Bring: Bring your own x-country skis and poles. Dress for the weather in layers. Bring a backpack with water, snacks, lunch, heavier jacket to put on at lunch, extra mittens, and hat. Optional handwarmers and toe warmers.
